Here's What My Clients
Have To Say:

Michael Williams

I would highly recommend to anyone wanting to design a custom home that they consult Phillip Rye. I was initially concerned that going through a home design process from several hundred miles away could be disastrous, but found it to be just the opposite. Any changes needed or wanted were handled quickly and efficiently and to my satisfaction, and I am very happy with the resulting house plan. It is truly amazing to see a plan that has been in your head for a long time finally make it to paper, and Phillip made the process easy and enjoyable.

Phillip,

My wife and I found working with you a great pleasure. Thank you for your excellent advice and detailed drawings.  We were very pleased with your attention to detail and quick turn around with changes.

Al and Stacey Lewis
Anderson, MO

Going into this process, I was somewhat worried about designing our house entirely over the internet.
After working with Phillip, I can only say that we are very pleased with the final outcome. He was very patient, worked through our revisions, and absolutely used technology to its full benefits.

At times, it was like we were in the same room discussing the design and changes.
Bottom line - I highly recommend Phillip Rye and Associates to help you develop your house plans.

Eddie and Diane Gray,
San Antonio, TX

When finding someone to draw up our dream home, I was unsure about doing our house plans via e-mail and phone calls, but once we got started, everything was a breeze.  Phillip was very attentive to the message I was trying to convey as far as changed in the house plans as we went along.  I was able to send him pictures of thing I was trying to achieve and he was able to put them in place. His response time was prompt and took time to explain various aspects of why something may not work or why something was a better option.  Overall Phillip’s communication with me was remarkable.

Now we have our dream home plans and are ready to start building.  I would highly recommend using Phillip and his services to anyone looking for an almost effortless process.    Tracy K.      La Grange, Texas

Phillip,
Thank you so much for working with us.  At first I was concerned about using e-mail as our first line of communication, but after all is said and done I can not imagine a better way of developing a home plan that is just right for our family.  Using e-mail and the occasional phone call gave us plenty of time to make necessary changes.  We appreciate your patience and prompt response to our questions.
We will highly recommend you to our friends and family.
Thank You,  John and Cindy Brown

-----------------------------------------

My wife and I met Mr. Rye at a Kodiak Steel Homes workshop earlier this year.  We were very impressed with his in-depth knowledge of the Kodiak product line....

We could not be more pleased with the outcome.  Working remotely via email (we live in GA) and phone the process was handled without any difficulties.  We could visualize our plan’s progress thru timely updates from Mr. Rye – and he wasn’t satisfied until he had exactly what we wanted.

If you are considering skipping the energy efficiency plans – don’t.  The savings are well worth the investment and he helped us incorporate design strategies to more efficiently utilize a geothermal system.  We couldn’t be more pleased with the service and end product!   Shawn & Susan Burks

To: Phillip Rye
From: Brad and Renee Baldwin

....I contacted Phillip and told him what we had in the way of a sketch, what we wanted in the house, and how important energy saving and building “green” was to my husband.  He was most helpful and assured me he could do what we wanted....

Phillip was very accommodating and had that change done by the next day.  We only had three revisions, probably because we had two civil engineers working together!  It was a painless, no stress experience and we would recommend it to anyone.  We have not met Phillip Rye, but we trust him, respect him, and are impressed with his fast and professional service.

-----------------------------------------

Phillip,

Elizabeth and I want to thank you for helping us take this major step in our lives.  We are now on the right track to building our energy efficient dream home.  Even though we were from out of town, with today's technology it was as if we were next door.  It could not have been easier.  It was a pleasure working with you, and we appreciate everything.  Thank you again.

Sincerely,      Jamie and Elizabeth Anderson

-----------------------------------------

Ron and I have found it very easy to work with you, Phillip.  You have done everything we've asked and then some.  We have been amazed at how quickly you respond to our emails and make the changes we request. I
never dreamed it would be so easy to have our house plans drawn up.  We look forward to your energy analysis and plan to build our home so we can afford to live in it when we are on a fixed income. Our only regret is not to have met you in person.  Maybe someday, if you decide to take a trip to Yellowstone
National Park, you will stop by our place in Wyoming to see your masterpiece.  I can't wait to have the house built and live in it.

I plan to recommend you to any of our friends or relatives looking to build a new
home or upgrade their current homes to become more energy efficient.

Thank you, Phillip!

Quality, convenience, and affordability. If you desire a custom home and have at least a rough idea of what you want, Phillip Rye is the way to go..... Neither my wife or I have much computer experience but working with Phillip was easy. He does respond to e-mails within 24 hours(usually at midnight).  The longest we ever waited for a plan change was one week. The home you and Phillip design can truly be as personalized as if you went to an architect but at 10% of the expense.
Paul and Marjorie Lakey, Schofield, WI

-----------------------------------------

My family and I would like to thank you for your work on our house plans and energy analysis. Initially, when my Uncle told me about you, I was just inquiring about your service and never expected to go through with a complete design and analysis while still on active duty in California.
But,
after a couple of phone conversations and emails, I was convinced that you were exactly the person I wanted helping us with one of the most significant projects we would ever undertake.
When we start building with Insulated Concrete Forming (ICF) , Geothermal HVAC, and your signiture energy efficient design we'd like you to consider further consultation.
Again, thank you for everything and we look forward to working with you in the near future.

God bless, Steve and Lisa

-----------------------------------------

Hi again, Phillip.

.... I'll tell you what, you are super efficient and on the ball! People are lucky to have you working with them, especially when they want things done in a timely manner! :).......
God will bless you for all you do, I know he will!  Sincerely,   Stefni Young

We have always had an idea of what our dream home would be; yet when the time came to put our ideas on paper, we were at a loss. We wanted to build an energy efficient home, but had very few resources to use. We discovered Phillip Rye through a web search, and contacted him immediately. Working with Phillip was easy and convenient. We communicated through email and phone calls to work on our house plans, and he was always prompt in his replies. With his background in energy efficiency, he was able to answer our questions thoroughly and help us make the right decisions on the design of our home. It has been a wonderful experience working with Phillip! We are so happy with the final plan and will recommend him to all of our friends, family, and coworkers.
Jason & Heather, White Hall, AR

Dear Phillip,
I wanted to drop you a line, to express our thanks, for doing such a good job on our plans.
We appreciate the time spent working through our changes and your input making sure our plan flowed well.
Working via email worked well for us; do to our busy schedule and being able to see the plan change as we went was great.
We’ll be building for my Mother and Son after this project and will certainly be in touch.

Thanks again for your help.

What's The Safest Room In Your Home?

Being prepared for severe weather conditions goes beyond buying batteries and stocking up on bottled water during the storm season.  If a tornado suddenly comes through your town or a hurricane lands on your door step, where will you and your family go?

Unfortunately, masonry, framing, and sheetrock are no match for 200 mph, destructive winds and airborne debris.  If you are searching for someone that understands storm rooms and, more importantly, how precious life can be, I will work with you on getting a very specific, low cost, storm room that will protect you and your family during the worst of storms.

This storm room:

  • Meets all FEMA standards and can withstand winds produced by F5 tornadoes.

  • It's easy to finish out as a room of your home, can be wired and plumbed.

  • Radio, TV, or cell phones can be used inside the room.

  • Takes the place of a closet or storage space without notice.

During the design process we will discuss your needs of a storm shelter and I can incorporate the design into your custom home plans.

GREEN HOME DESIGN/
Cape Cod
ENERGY ANALYSIS

 Heating and Air Systems
Bigger Isn’t Better

Does your house have cold and hot spots? Is a basement bedroom always cold or damp feeling? Is an upstairs bedroom always hotter than the rest of your home? According to recent studies, 95% of new air-conditioning installations fail in regard to operating efficiency, with more than 70% of systems improperly sized or installed.

Heat Flows Downhill

Just like water, you can say that heat ALWAYS flows downhill, or from high energy (warm) to lower energy (cool). You see, heat will build up until it can find a cooler place to go. When you open your front door in the summer, heat rushes in. The cold air doesn’t rush out. Open your door in the winter, the heated air rushes out. Heat builds up in your home due to sunlight, people, appliances, etc. In the summer we want to get this heat out and replace it with nice conditioned air.

Residential air-conditioning systems are made up of indoor and outdoor systems connected by pipes that circulate a refrigerant such as Freon or Puron. Without getting into technical details, the compressor in the system compresses the liquid refrigerant. By manipulating pressure and temperature, the indoor unit can absorb heat out of the house or extract heat into the house depending on the season.

In addition to conditioning the air, air conditioners serve another important function. They dehumidify the air. In the same way moisture condenses on the side of a cold glass of water sitting outside on a hot day, air conditioners extract moisture from warm, humid air and deliver it outside the house through a evaporator coil.

Oversize units waste money and will not
dehumidify your home.

Oversized systems satisfy the temperature at the thermostat so quickly that very little moisture is removed from your home. This is known as short cycling. Short cycling is more of a problem in the southern US in humid climates. Short cycling also causes large peak demands on electrical supply systems.

Air conditioning units are least efficient when they first start up. It takes 15-20 minutes for a system to reach peak operating efficiency. Oversized units run shorter cycles so more time is spent running in the least efficient part of the cycle.

Shorter cycling and high humidity in your home equals an uncomfortable home and
HIGH electric bills! At a cost of around $2000 per ton, oversized units cost considerably more. Why pay for a 5 ton system when 3 tons will do? That’s at least a $4000 savings!

Rye Home Energy Consultants Wants To Save
You Money! Lots Of It!!

So how do we determine the correct and guaranteed size of heating and cooling system you need? On new construction we take your home plans and run them through our computer using ACCA’s (Air Conditioning Contractors Of America) Manual J Residential Load Calculations. This is how we arrive at room-by-room totals for heating and cooling needs for your home. Manual J calculations are VERY IMPORTANT because you cannot design a duct system properly without these calculations. Duct systems installed without Manual J calculations are what we call “the Bubba method”. Bubba the contractor looks at your 3000 sq. ft. home and says, “Yep, you need 6 tons”. Some of you are smiling right now and thinking, that’s exactly what he said.

Now you tell me. How does he know this? HE DOESN’T! You may need 9 tons, or 6 tons, or even 3 tons. Do not let someone guess at the size system you need.

Manual J calculations takes into account solar-heat gains, direction the house is facing and orientation to the sun and shading, which can greatly affect the loads needed. We also take into account window sizes, ceiling heights, wall insulation, floor insulation, foundation type, ceiling insulation, and everything else that can affect the heat generated in your home.

Why do electric cooperatives all over the
country love what we teach?

Here is one reason why electric cooperatives all across the country love what we teach. Build your house energy efficient, let us size the heating and cooling system for your home, and you will enjoy a comfortable home with low utility bills.

So how does this help electric companies you may ask? See, when an electric company builds a power generating plant it must be designed for the maximum peak loads even if it only happens once a year. Right from the start they are already spending hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars more than they should have to.

Ever wonder why places like California have brown-outs during a hot summer? It’s because the power generating plants cannot keep up with the demand for electricity. Almost every single building in the state is calling for maximum cooling at the same time. Now remember, this may only happen once a year, BUT they have to build the plant large enough to handle this one peak.

When you build your home like we teach those peak demands are kept to a minimum, and when there is a peak it’s much lower because the amount of electricity needed is less. Which takes more electricity? 500,000 homes with 5 ton systems or 3 ton systems? You get the point?

Oh, and one other thing! Now we don’t have to import nearly as much coal from other countries to power the plants and now we can reduce the amount of emissions coming from the power plants.

While the home energy analysis is an optional service when I draw your plans, you can't afford NOT to do it.

Each day thousands of homeowners live the American dream and start to build their new home.  However, they overlook one of the most important steps in the home building process.  They allow their contractor, who usually knows nothing about energy efficiency, to guess at the size of heating and cooling system they need for their home.

An incorrectly sized heating and cooling system results in

  • thousands of dollars in excess equipment
(this is where we can save you BIG $$$),

  • an uncomfortable home,

  • higher utility bills, and

  • shorter equipment life.

WHAT DO I GET WITH THE

ENERGY ANALYSIS?

Everything you need to know about the energy
 efficiency of your home.

When we run the energy calculations on your home we enter in all the important information that affects the heating and cooling loads on your home.  We look at the direction the house faces, window sizes, foundation types, ceiling heights, room sizes, exposed exterior wall, room sizes, and other design aspects.

We will return your set of plans along with a detailed energy specification list and a written guarantee on your average heating and cooling costs.

Our specifications include requirements for:

  • Floor insulation

  • Wall insulation

  • Caulking

  • Ceiling Insulation

  • Lighting

  • Windows

  • Ductwork / return air sizing

  • Water heaters

  • Roof decking

  • Energy efficient framing techniques

We normally charge 15 cents per sq. ft. (heated and cooled) to size your heating and cooling system and give you a written guarantee on your average heating and cooling costs.

However, if I draw your plans that is discounted to 10 cents per sq. ft.
That's over 30% savings!

We have done this hundreds of times all across America and never had one come back.
